Making a Topic Map

Making a Topic Map
 XML

Hypertext navigation has been automatically created for this information set using Topic Map technology from InfoLoom  The navigation aids have been created based on topics and associations that the designers believe will be useful to those trying to find their way through the bewildering galaxy of XML related Web standards.

 HTML

To make this map, we have automatically extracted topics directly from the HTML markup as well from a list of topics prepared by the designers.  All <h1> tags have become topics of the type "Standard".  You can find these in a special "Standards" index.  All <h2> tags have been extracted as topics of the type "Organizations" and you can find these listed in the "Organizations" index.  All words marked up with italics or bold (<i> or <b>) have become topics of the type "Keyword" and you will find these listed in a keyword index.  Finally all illustrations have become topics of the type "illustration" and are indexed as such.

 ICE
 XML

We have provided alternate names (or aliases) for some topics.  So, for example "XML" and "Extensible Markup Language" are different names for the same topic.  And "ICE" and "Information and Content Exchange" are different names for the same topic.  This means that both occurrences will be linked as if they were a single topic in the virtual navigation layer.

We have used a feature of the Topic Map standard to associate topics and form relationships so that the reader could understand how information can be related to form subject matter knowledge.  For example, we have indicated relationships between a standard and the organization that hosts the development of that standard.  We have also formed associations between the full name of each standard and the acronym for the standard.  You can find these relationships highlighted in topic screens.
