Since IDEAlliance published its PRISM Source Vocabulary Specifications and the related PRISM 3.0 Specifications in 2012, software vendors are coming to market with products that have support for these specifications right out of the box. In addition to publishing Specifications, the PRISM Metadata Initiative publishes a number of Guides, or Guidelines. These documents are intended to provide recommedations for implementations and best practices. Currently 3 Guides are available. |

The first PRISM Specification (1.0) was published in 2001. Initially the scope of PRISM was metadata for print-based periodicals. Several revisions and were published. PRISM 2.0 was published in 2008. This was the first major revision to PRISM and the scope of PRISM was expanded to include both print and online periodical content. In addition PRISM 2.0 added a metadata set to describe Usage Rights. And with the new additions to the specification, it was modularized. |
