Best Practices for Print…OR, How to succeed in the digital age of print without really trying
We have heard it before; best practices, standardized workflows, cycle time reduction, cost containment, grow your business. Our industry is at a critical juncture. We can create and distribute information with the push of a button, but does it really relay the message we are trying to convey? Printing is a mass manufacturing process. Many products are manufactured regionally to take advantage of distribution savings and maximize the cycle time. Good process control uses these best practices, specifications and standards as the benchmark for successful message/product delivery. There are new metrics being deployed across the workflow and supply chain that IDEAlliance has identified. Our latest update to the SWOP & GRACoL Specifications – the Printing Guidelines v12.0 – identifies these enablers to successful process control. In this session we highlight what’s new, and what’s still importantin print production.

Open Forum to Discover, Debate and Drive Media Production Architecture of Tomorrow: Content or Design? As Karen McGrane, content evangelist and Managing Director at Bond Art +Science observes, “Publishers don’t get to decide which device their customers use to read their content—readers do. Getting content out onto all these different new devices and platforms requires a dynamic and flexible content architecture." Can magazines be designed so that final layout can be automated across a wide array of digital platforms? Does it make sense to author magazine content independently from intended design? Will the process of design change, as pressure to increase production efficiencies to deliver issues across a wide variety of digital platforms grows in importance? What role will design play when content is aggregated and sold in personalized channels outside the covers of a magazine and issue? |
