Continuing Education for XML Professionals
in Chicago or from your desktop!

In the years since XML was introduced at the IDEAlliance 1997 Markup Conference, XML has made the transition from an emerging technology to the core foundation at the heart of today’s content creation, production and delivery tools, processes and workflows. This seminar focuses on current and emerging media production technologies driven by XML --- or XTechs!

What are XTechs?

Docbook, DITA and PRISM® are all XTechs!  XMP, CM, KM and DAM are all XTechs enabled by XML. EPUB®, nextPub® and HTML5, leading-edge content delivery/display technologies, are XTechs too!

Seminar Format and Location

IDEAlliance will employ Web technologies to connect the XML user community through its XTech 2012 In-Person & Virtual Seminar.

A three day program at the Embassy Suites Chicago-O’Hare will provide a face-to-face educational and networking experience for those able to attend in person. For others, select sessions will be available real-time over the Internet or as recordings that can be accessed at any time.

9:30 - 10:45 AM XML Case Studies
Leveraging XML to Enable Cross-Media Publishing
Stephen Arbour, Managing Editor, Inc.

As the need for cross-media publishing increases, publishers must rely more on automation to speed the production of print, Web and tablet editions on a consistent basis as part of the normal production workflow.  In this session learn how to leverage XML as key component of cross-media publishing, with specific focus on print-to-Web, print-to-tablet and xml-to-print-and-tablet automations. Case studies based on the American Chemical Society, Rolling Stone Magazine, and Sotheby's auction house will be used to illustrate key points in this presentation.
Automating Cross-Platform Book Publishing with XML
John Dobbin, Principal Nexus IT

Dymocks is Australia's largest bookseller. Rather than resign themselves to ever-shrinking book sales, they have decided to change the playing field. Through the creation of a fully automated book publishing process they are opening the market to nascent authors, allowing them for very little cost to create a very professional looking Print or eBook and publish it. The key to the solution is XML. Learn how Dymocks is using XML to transform its publishing business.
10:45 - 11:00 AM Break
11:00 - 12:30 PM Advanced XML How-To's:
  Managing Links for Cross-platform Publishing
Mark Baker, CEO Analecta Communications

Managing links is a significant problem when content is to be reused in different contexts and media. The problem is, how can you guarantee that the target of the link is going to be available or appropriate in every context or media in which the topic is reused? Various solutions have been attempted, from simply removing all links from reusable content, to mapping links externally. But such approaches tend to be cumbersome and often compromise the usability of the content. Soft linking provides an alternate approach which not only resolves the problem of links in reusable content, but reduces the burden of link creation for authors and allows far richer linking of topics.

Impact of XML Granularity on Workflow Design
Dorothy Hoskins, XML Architect, Jouve NA

How can publishers organize effective workflows to do markup for highly granular XML? What skillsets are needed, and how can they be developed? What roles can automation play?
We will explore some common problems with creating complex granular XML and some strategies used to improve markup and assure quality.
* Validating environments (guided authoring tools)
* Training in content models
* Divide-and-conquer strategies with editorial and specialist staffing
* Hinting, form-filling, and WYSIWYG interfaces
* Data ingestions from Excel to XML (for data-like content)
12:30 - 1:20 PM Lunch Break
1:30 - 3:00 PM Looking to the Future
The Ultimate in XML -- Media Convergence
Thaddeus Kubis, Evangelist, Institute for Media Convergence

We are currently undergoing a radical shift in the delivery of information. As the recipient strives for more and more information we demand to have it our way, as in OUR media. We require branded content and context, we seek to define the delivery media of our choice. We strive to view our needs, on a device or devices our choice. How many screens or devices will you view today, tomorrow, next week.  In this session, learn more about = the future of Media Convergence, a combination of content, communications, computer technology and yes the consumer. Case studies will be provided and examined.
XML Up Front;  Benefits and Goblins
Mark Gross, President Data Conversion Laboratories

Breaking through the myths, this presentation will review the benefits and pitfalls of an XML upfront implementation from a data perspective. It will cover some of the challenges that surface when publishing directly from XML -- graphics placements, tight layouts, and complex tables – and the tradeoffs you might need to consider. Learn about the kind of things you should think about in advance, when considering where XML should fit into your publishing workflow.
