About DEER
The Digital Enterprise Education and Research (DEER) Foundation is a non-profit foundation established by IDEAlliance in 2005. The DEER foundation has a mission to promote research and education for graphic arts and the media industry.
Research
The DEER Foundation fulfills its research mission by funding research studies at the request of IDEAlliance Working Groups and Committees. In 2011 the Deer Foundation funded two studies, supporting interns from the Rochester Institute of Technology for studies of print tolerances – with results presented at the IDEAlliance 2011 Technical Conference – and printing ink, to be released late 2011.
Education
The DEER Foundation fulfills its education mission by providing scholarships and financial aid to students and mid-career professionals with a fervent interest in advertising, media, printing, and publishing. The DEER Foundation funds student scholarships through the Graphic Communications Scholarship Award and Career Advancement Foundation and scholarships to mid-career professionals through the Karen Chiovaro Education Award. In addition, in 2011 the DEER Foundation funded the Printing Guidelines Poster 2011 as a tool to educate print buyers and print providers on consistent, high quality color printing, according to the latest G7 specifications and ISO standards.
The poster was segmented in three areas:
Creatives & Print Buyers section explains how to ensure work is prepared, proofed and printed as accurately as possible. It also discusses some of the challenges facing color printing and how to manage expectations.
Prepress & Proofing section describes how to convert creative materials into press-ready CMYK files and how to create and verify accurate prepress proofs.
Pressroom section charts the ISO-standard inks and substrates and the G7 print control metrics for various print specifications.

Funding
The DEER Foundation is supported by contributions to the annual Luminaire Awards event, sale of training materials such as the Print Guidelines poster, and other sponsorship program. If you are interested in supporting DEER as a sponsor, contact David Steinhardt
