XMP-Open is now
XMP Solutions Interoperability Initiative (www.xmpinterop.org)

XMP-Open, a partnership between IDEAlliance and Adobe, had as its mission the development educational materials, case studies, use case scenarios and provided a platform to introduce the concepts behind this powerful enabling technology to the industry. Now the industry has moved from the evangelism phase to the implementation phase and the mission of XMP-Open is complete.

Today, it is generally accepted that “smart assets” are the key to empowering truly seamless automation across global, digital media supply chains. Smart assets carry with them all the information about what they are, how they have been processed, how they should be processed as well as the rights for their use and reuse. Adobe’s XMP certainly has provided a good conceptual starting point for defining a “smart asset.” But now, almost a decade after the introduction of XMP, the promise of seamless media workflow automation has yet to be realized. The reasons for this are subject to debate. Adobe’s XMP Specification clearly supports standardized metadata handling for Adobe’s products. Yet those who wish to extend this concept across the broader digital asset supply chain face tremendous challenges. The mission of the “XMP Solutions Interoperability Initiative” (XSII) is identify and address these challenges in order to enable the broader media industry to gain the efficiencies and workflow automation that the implementation of XMP-based “smart assets” promises to provide.
