What will it take to make news standards matter?

When it comes to news, time is definitely money. Studies of usage patterns for news databases at LexisNexis show a consistent pattern: news is hot when it is initially released and then falls off steeply - but not to zero! The lesson is clear: you have a short window for extracting the economic value from the news if you want to be able to deliver the social benefits of a news archive.

Standards that get adopted by technology vendors, news organizations, publishers and syndicators can produce orders of magnitude improvements in time-to-market and reliability, with increased opportunities for innovative products to boot. Standards that don't won't help us. What can the standards groups do to ensure that the work they produce is adopted, not ignored.

NewsML Implementation in Japan

Why NewsML has fascinated Japanese news media? Why NewsML is widely diffused in Japan? We speak about the diffusion of NewsML in Japan and the reasons by introducing some implementation cases.

What kind of role has NSK, the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association, played? NSK NewsML Team consists of over 70 people form 41 newspapers, news agencies and vendors. The team started their work in September 2000, when was just before NewsML was released by IPTC, with the aim of adopting a new format for news. After several months' discussion on the requirements of the format in parallel with studying NewsML, we found NewsML is the very worth considering. August 2001 NSK released guidelines when media use NewsML in Japan.

NSK holds exhibition called Japan Newspaper Production Show every two year. We also show how NewsML was implemented in systems exhibited in this November's show. For the case study of a standard diffusion we speak how we spread NewsML as well as problems we encountered during the process.
