Global Technologies, Inc. Awarded STAR
(Standards for Technology in Automotive
Retail) Project
Vancouver,
BC, January 10th, 2002 - XML Global
Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: XMLG), an
XML middleware company, announced today
that it has been awarded the contract
for a reference implementation of ebXML
based messaging services for the Standards
for Technology in Automotive Retail
(www.starstandard.org) STAR/XML project.
The
stated objective of the STAR project
is to use voluntary information technology
(IT) standards, specifically ebXML and
OAGIS, the Open Applications Group's
XML business object document specification,
as catalysts in fulfilling the business
information needs of dealers and manufacturers
while reducing the times and effort
previously required to support these
activities. The members of the STAR
Group include the National Automobile
Dealers Association (NADA) and most
North American automobile manufacturer
including American Honda Co., American
Suzuki Corp., BMW of North America,
DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors,
Jaguar Cars, Kia, Mazda North America,
Mitsubishi of America, Inc., Nissan
North America, Porsche Cars North America,
Saab Cars North America, Toyota USA,
Volkswagen of America, Volvo Cars of
North America and many of the retail
system providers including ADP, Arkona,
AutoMate, EDS, PBS, Reynolds & Reynolds,
Sun MicroSystems, and Universal Computer
Systems.
"The
importance of the STAR project cannot
be overstated," said Peter Shandro,
CEO of XML Global Technologies. "This
initiative will establish an Internet-based
transaction system linking together
automobile manufacturers with the more
than 20,000 franchised North American
auto dealers. Everyone will benefit
as auto manufacturers and dealers will
have better management information while
consumers will receive improved levels
of services. An additional benefit,"
continued Shandro, "is that by using
ebXML technology the STAR project will
not only include the large auto manufacturers
and dealers, but will also be accessible
by any smaller operation with a computer
system and an Internet connection."
"By
implementing this phase of the STAR
initiative with XML Global, a leading
XML and ebXML authority, we are seeing
the fruition of two years of preparation
and hard work," said Tony Blazej, the
Director of Industry Programs for the
Open Applications Group. "The OAGI,
in fostering this open standards initiative,
and XML Global who will be implementing
the STAR messaging, are together validating
both ebXML and the strategic vision
of STAR and OAG members. By moving forward
with the STAR initiative," continued
Blazej, "the automotive industry is
leading the way in adopting advanced
Internet technologies and global standards
that will redefine the metrics of interactions
and services between retailers and customers."
Under
the terms of the agreement XML Global
Technologies will build a reference
implementation of the STAR/XML based
transaction system for all auto industry
participants to evaluate and then use
as the basis for developing specific
applications. STAR members can then
begin work on their implementations
when this first phase is completed.
The complete system could be in full
operation later this year
