AP
Digital and ScreamingMedia Partner to
Upgrade and Deliver AP MegaSports News
Packages with Sports Markup Language
The
upgraded packages will be available
to both companies' Web and wireless
customers and provide enhanced functionality
and flexibility for content presentation
New
York, N.Y., April 2, 2002 - ScreamingMedia
Inc., a leading provider of information
management products and services, and
AP Digital, a division of The Associated
Press that distributes news and information
to Internet and wireless customers,
today announced that they have agreed
to adopt and implement the SportsML
format for AP MegaSports news feeds
using ScreamingMedia's conversion technology.
The
joint offering, AP MegaSports in XML,
will be delivered to Web environments,
wireless applications and other interactive
platforms, to provide customers with
significantly faster implementation,
better customization capabilities, and
enhanced functionality.
SportsML
uses eXtensible Markup Language (XML),
to create flexible packaging of sports
content. Features of AP MegaSports that
SportsML will facilitate integration
of include sport-specific scrolling
headlines, linked content, in-progress
updates, play-by-play, and more.
"Together
we have adopted SportsML to give our
customers greater flexibility and advanced
format options, presenting us with new
opportunities to serve our customers,"
said Thomas E. Slaughter, vice president
and director of AP Digital. "We are
happy to work with ScreamingMedia to
enhance and deliver this SportsML news
package."
The
service will be rolled out over the
next three months and will include headlines,
stories, scores, stats, sounds and photos
from all major U.S. and many world professional
sports leagues, as well as top amateur
and collegiate competitions. The AP
MegaSports package provides sites and
services with stories, scores, stats,
sounds and photos 24 hours a day.
"We
are proud to be working with AP Digital
in delivering AP MegaSports in XML,
a top-notch sports news service," said
Kirk Loevner, president and CEO of ScreamingMedia.
“This partnership will benefit our respective
customers, who will receive exactly
the information they need, in the formats
they want.”
SportsML
is an emerging open global standard
for the interchange of sports data,
and is being developed by the International
Press Telecommunications Council, an
independent international association
of the world's leading news agencies
and publishers. Markup languages applied
to news feeds allow for easy packaging
of text stories, audio, video, photos
and other multimedia content.
