nextPub® Version 1.0 Specifications Posted for Public Comment
The first public draft of the new nextPub V1.0 Specifications and related PRISM 3.0 Specifications posted for 45 Day comment period
[Alexandria, VA, December 20, 2011] In 2011, IDEAlliance® launched the nextPub initiative to foster the development of next-generation publishing tools, best practices and standards for multi-channel publishing. The IDEAlliance nextPub® Initiative has posted its first specifications for public comment. Three nextPub Specifications and related PRISM 3.0 Specifications can be downloaded from www.nextPub.org.
On April 3, 2010 the publishing ecosystem was changed forever. For magazines, the launch of the iPad signaled the exciting new era of interactive, innovative publications accompanied by new revenue opportunities. IDEAlliance responded by launching the nextPub Initiative, chaired by Peter Meirs, Vice President of Production Technologies, Time Inc. The nextPub initiative is supported by MPA, the Magazine Media Association, AAAA/Ad-ID, and the Japanese Magazine Publishing Association, and works in close collaboration with the IDPF EPUB3 Working Group to develop specifications and best practices that form the foundation for new, platform-agnostic workflows.
At the heart of nextPub is the nextPub XML Source Content Encoding Specification. This Specification defines a semantically rich, platform-agnostic content and rich media encoding schema. This specification combines enhanced PRISM 3.0 metadata along with the power of HTML5 to encode all the components that make up a publication ─ from the cover, to the masthead, to navigation devices, to articles or chapters and to advertising materials. nextPub extends the use of PRISM metadata beyond magazines to cover books, textbooks, bookazines and more. nextPub source content encoding is designed to support efficient aggregation and production of multi-channel content while preserving the publisher’s ability to distinctively brand the look and feel.
The nextPub Draft Specifications can be downloaded from www.nextPub.org. The public comment period runs until February 1, 2012.
