Abstract
As the adoption of Web Services has grown, so has the need for Web Services standards. Consortiums such as W3C and OASIS are developing Web Services standards and reference models in areas as diverse as architecture, security, messaging, choreography, and the semantic Web Services. The impact of current and emerging standards on Web Services adoption and advancement is vast.
This session will provide a high-level survey of the current Web Services standards "landscape", with an emphasis on standards and recommendations from W3C, OASIS, and WS-I. Other open consortiums (such as Liberty Alliance) will also be discussed, as will specifications that have the potential to become open standards (e.g. WS-Policy of GXA). Some of the standards to be covered are "developed" (i.e. a version 1.0 specification has been released), while others are emerging (i.e. a version 1.0 is in process, or the standard has just been submitted to a consortium such as OASIS). Additional standards that are not specifically Web Services-focused (such as OASIS SAML) but have applications to Web Services will also be examined.
Areas such as the following will be covered:
* Web Services "Basics" - will cover foundational areas such as SOAP and WSDL, and their latest activity;
* Security - will cover current and emerging standards such as OASIS WS-Security (security framework), OASIS SAML (assertions/single sign-on), and OASIS XACML (access control);
* Choreography and Business Process - will cover current and emerging standards such as OASIS WS BPEL (business process), OASIS WS-CAF (transaction, coordination, and context propagation), and the W3C Web Services Choreography Activity;
* Web Services Monitoring and Management - will cover current and emerging standards such as the OASIS Web Services Distributed Management (WSDM) TC;
* Reliable Messaging - will cover potential, current and emerging standards such as WS-ReliableMessaging (GXA) and OASIS Web Services Reliable Messaging (WSRM)
The relationship and potential interaction between each area discussed will be emphasized, with a focus on any current/potential interactions between standards (such as between OASIS SAML and WS-Security).
