Software AG's XML Technology

Abstract

Software AG, a pioneer in XML solutions, released updated versions of its XML server products in 2003. Our products and solutions focus on standards-based XML integration such as Web services and enterprise content management. Software AG's XML server products are Tamino XML Server, EntireX XML Mediator, and EntireX Communicator. This presentation will provide an overview of the products, new updates and supported standards, and a demonstration of how these products offer enhanced functionality.

Tamino XML Server is a native XML server. Tamino provides all of the capabilities of an enterprise database with a focus on XML as the data model for information to be stored. Tamino was designed as a new product to meet the unique challenges of managing XML building on Software AG's 30 years experience with hierarchical and relational databases and products Adabas and Adabas D. As a result, Tamino has been fully optimized for the storage of XML documents with full support for APIs and interfaces for XML including XPath, XQuery, HTTP APIs, SOAP APIs, and supports for all major languages including C, Java, .NET and scripting languages.

In January of 2003, Software AG announced that Tamino supported XQuery for querying XML. XQuery is an important W3C standard for querying XML, building on Tamino's support for XPath and XSLT. In July of 2003, Software AG announced that Tamino can store and index non-XML documents, such as Microsoft Office, StarOffice, OpenOffice, HTML, Plain text files (UTF-8), MPEG Audio (often known as MP3 files), RTF (Rich Text Format) and ZIP files.

EntireX XML Mediator is an XML exchange, routing and transformation engine. EntireX XML Mediator is used to manage a document processing sequence on XML documents for the purpose of integrating systems together. Developers can use an intuitive GUI to assemble rules for content-based routing and processing of XML documents. EntireX XML Mediator is integrated with over 250+ different data sources and applications through integrated gateways and adapters to systems such as relational databases, enterprise applications, and mainframe systems.

EntireX Communicator provides a high-throughput communication broker to connect programmatic environments and legacy environments such as Mainframe systems to modern interfaces such as XML, Web Services, Java, and .NET. Supported legacy systems include mainframe CICS environments, Adabas, DB2, Cobol, and Natural. In August 2003, Software AG announced that EntireX Communicator supported new integrated interfaces and open standards including .NET, JMS, and EJB interfaces and the UDDI standard.

EntireX Communicator's XML wrapper technology focuses on exposing and wrapping existing applications as Web services. This server enables a mission-critical application written in COBOL or Natural to talk to any Web service - internal or external - as if it were calling a local subprogram. The August release extended support to map an XML document or a Web Service to an appropriate subprogram with a few mouse clicks.
