X2XL - OASIS Tables Meet Excel Spreadsheets

Abstract

X2XL is a bi-directional conversion tool for XML tables (OASIS/CALS model) and Excel spreadsheets. We will show conversions in both directions as well as round-trips.

X2XL handles conversion and tagging of rich text content and can be configured to handle your specific content model. The easy-to-use GUI that guides the user through the setup process will be demonstrated.

Some of the multiple usage models of X2XL will be discussed.

* Tabular data import: With new data coming from varied sources Excel is the most common format for tables.

* Table editorial: The ability to provide complex tables in a friendly Excel format to editors is a huge advantage.

* Output formatting: Web and CD delivery containing complex tabular data can be presented in Excel instead of HTML

X2XL is integrated with Epic editor which will allow us to show the use of Excel to edit tables directly from an XML editor.

The feature that will be discussed and demonstrated include:

* Support for OASIS (CALS) table DTD.

* Supports XML content formatting (bold, italic, super/subscript, etc...)

* Style definitions

* Fonts - family and size for title, head, body and foot

* Rules - row, column and box

* Rich text support - variable fonts and formatting in cell content

* Character Entities

* Unicode support

* Row and column spans

* Built in support for DTD-specific table entry content models
