XML and PDF in Publishing Workflows

Abstract

XML is the industry standard for neutral-coded content in publishing workflows. Combined with industry standard PDF for presentation, XML becomes a powerful tool for document creation, collaboration, and publishing process management.

In this presentation, the speaker will discuss how the combination of XML and PDF enables automated server-based publishing as well as creative desktop publishing workflows. He will describe a sample PDF document creation workflow using familiar authoring tools, and explain how authors can generate images and components using templates, then manipulate and assemble content for personalized multi-platform distribution.

Attendees will learn:

· XML markup languages throughout publishing workflow: XSLT, XFA, XSL-FO, SVG

· ISO Standards in the publishing process: PDF/X, PDF/A

· XML support within familiar publishing tools, including FrameMaker, InDesign, Quark Xpress, Illustrator, GoLive and Adobe Document Server

·Role of metadata in facilitating publishing workflows

·How XML and PDF enable the stable printable representation of dynamic text and graphics along with static content

Biography

Mr. Myers is responsible for the strategic technology direction for PDFand XML within the ePaper Server Products Group, which is responsible for Adobe's server-based software for images and PDF. Mr. Myers has more than 25 years of experience in the computer software and publishing industries at Datalogics, Frame, and Adobe. He was responsible for Datalogics PAGER publishing product and a number of early SGML and database publishing systems. Since then, he has been in product management and business development for FrameMaker and FrameMaker+SGML as well as the Acrobat products.
