H. Holger Rath is Head of Consulting at empolis - an international Bertelsmann company providing premium solutions for content management and knowledge management. Holger was empolis' Director Research & Development 2001-2002. He started at STEP Electronic Publishing Solutions GmbH - a company acquired by empolis - in 1996 as senior consultant and project manager and headed its consulting department from 1998-2001. Prior to his work for STEP he was head of the Document Computing department at the Computer Graphics Center (ZGDV e.V.).

Holger represents Germany in the ISO standards committee, which is responsible for SGML, DSSSL, HyTime, and Topic Maps.

He is author of the chapter "Topic Map Fundamentals for Knowledge Representation" in the Addison Wesley book "XML Topic Maps", co-author of the chapter "Topic Maps: Knowledge Navigation Aids" in the Prentice Hall book "The XML Handbook", author of the Standards Australia Handbook "XML Topic Maps for Knowledge Management" as well as author of "The Topic Maps Handbook" - an empolis White Paper.
