Virtual and Federated Topic Maps

We report on a framework of using Topic Map (TM) technology for information integration. According to this approach we assume that organization-wide applications operate not directly on native (e.g. relational) databases but only through an abstraction layer which provides a topic map interface. We describe how this virtualization can be implemented and discuss related performance issues.
