We have become so infatuated with the XML that we have forgotten the markup! Only by looking back at the markup and away from the supporting technologies can we bring order to the current X-burdened chaos. It is markup, specifically generic markup, which provides the power. XML syntax and the X-loaded alphabet soup of associated specifications grow from the need to create tractable generic markup and tools to manipulate it. It is not a problem that XML syntax can be used for other things, but using XML for other things is not the point, either. XML is about markup!
