Epic: Single Source Publishing with XML

Abstract

Arbortext is the only global provider of XML-based software that enables the creation, editing and publishing of information to multiple media types - Web, print, CD-ROM, wireless - from a single source of content. Shipping since 1991, Arbortext's standards-based software supports technical publishing, reference publishing and business publishing applications that enable enterprises to provide more accurate, cost-efficient, complete, timely, consistent and usable information on all media.

The vendor presentation will highlight Arbortext's product line, which includes Epic Editor, for desktop creation of XML-based documents, and the Epic E-Content Engine (E3), a server-side system for converting and automatically publishing dynamic content to a variety of media.

Epic Editor

Designed for creating XML and SGML content, Epic Editor meets the most demanding challenges faced by organizations that employ teams of authors, each working with large amounts of material, all of which need to be disseminated in multiple forms.

Epic Editor allows authors to write text, create tables, place graphics and configure links. Authors can use Epic Editor to author web content, books, manuals, reports, catalogs, encyclopedias, and other business, technical and reference documents. Because Epic Editor supports the creation of multi-level compound documents, which both enables and encourages reuse, many authors can collaborate simultaneously on the same document.

Both Epic Editor and E3 provide the industry's most extensive API through their support for the DOM (Document Object Model) and a broad array of extensions. Developers can work in virtually any programming or scripting language to access a vast set of Epic's capabilities.

E3

A web-based content conversion and publishing engine, E3 enables the conversion of content, both structured and unstructured, to XML for automatic publication of dynamic content to the Web, print, PDF, CD-ROM and wireless devices.

E3 automates the processing of both structured and unstructured content to provide a richer experience for the content user and to improve knowledge sharing across and enterprise. It accepts valid XML from any source; it also consolidates content from multiple data formats (e.g. Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, and Interleaf), and convert that content to XML. In addition, E3's conversion capabilities are bi-directional, allowing conversion from the single source of content back to the original formats in which content was created. This capability enables the original authors to go back and rework or update content as needed and return it to a content repository quickly and efficiently.
