Abstract
XMLdocs will launch late this year and will first be presented at this conference.
Overview
XMLdocs is a Web-based content creation, management and publishing system that is radically different from existing XML content solutions. Non-technical business people can create XML documents using familiar word-processing functionality that XMLdocs adds to Microsoft Internet Explorer. Documents are stored in a central repository, making it easy for teams to collaborate throughout the authoring process. Documents can be immediately published to a Web site or elsewhere through XML Web Services.
XMLdocs uses the most advanced features of Internet Explorer to deliver a rich user experience. The result is a system that combines the convenience of browser-based applications with the advanced productivity features expected by users of Windows applications such as Microsoft Office.
=============
Document Editing
XMLdocs Editor is a Web-based tool for creating XML documents. Designed for non-technical authors, its intuitive user interface allows content contributors with little or no knowledge of XML to author XML documents. The editor has two authoring views, Normal View and XML View, and a previewer.
Normal View
In Normal View, the complexity of XML is hidden. Users can create and edit XML documents using a word-processor-like interface with document templates. Placeholders are used to show where and what type of content can be entered. Features include image rendering and user-defined keyboard shortcuts.
XML View
Developers who like to see what's happening behind the scenes can easily jump into XML View where they will find a feature-full XML Editor and Validator, with color-coding, automatic tag closing, and debugging.
Preview
Preview allows authors to see how their documents will look when viewed in a browser. A document can be previewed against any number of XSL Transformations.
=============
Document Management
XMLdocs' document management system allows groups of users to store documents in a central location. Documents can easily be exported from XMLdocs to a user's local machine.
=============
Template Library
XMLdocs templates make it easy for authors to create documents in a WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) environment.
Public Templates
XMLdocs has built-in templates that are available for everyone to use. Built-in templates include...
- Press Release
- Help Topic
- Knowledge-base Article
- Product Description
- Job Description
- Meeting Minutes
- Executive Biography
Private Templates
Groups can build a library of their own templates by copying and modifying existing public templates or writing their own custom templates.
=============
Collaboration
Collaboration features include...
Check-in/Check-out
Before a document can be edited, it must be checked out. Checked out documents can be viewed, but not edited by other members. This protects document edits from being inadvertently overwritten.
Shared Document Repository
Members of a workspace have a shared document repository. This eliminates the need to email documents back and forth or worry about who has the latest version.
=============
Publishing
Documents can be published through an XML Web Service. Users have the choice of transforming the content on the fly or saving transformed documents locally as HTML.
