Biography

Abstract

This 1 1/2 hour session will provide a broad overview of XML. The session will cover 4 areas of XML: (1) the background of XML; (2) the advantages of using XML; (3) how XML facilitates traditional business models and eBusiness; and (4) briefly describe XML and legacy systems.

The XML background section will describe XML's rich history. It will also describe the relationship of the XML specification to the ISO 8879 SGML standard and the W3C HTML specification.

During the second section we will look at the advantages of using XML. We will describe how XML uses structure and content to describe information. We will look at how to identify and use common business objects within XML. We will also provide information in providing multiple outputs, data validation, data aggregation, addressibility, personalization and intelligent searching issues.

During the third section we will describe how XML can facilitates traditional businesses who want to move into an eBusiness model as well as maintain their traditional business. We will learn how the DTD and/or XML Schema can describe business rules. We will also discuss the importance of performing an information and workflow analysis.

During the last section we will talk briefly about how XML and legacy systems can work together. We will show how XML can be a bridge to traditional EDI and/or publishing systems for eBusiness documents.
