Standards Update: ICE2 Protocol

Abstract

ICE, Information and Content Exchange, is an XML-based protocol to support establishing and managing controlled data exchange between business partners. This process, called syndication, was initially for distribution of content for Web portals. Today, however, ICE is used for the controlled exchange of B2B data as well. ICE automates the delivery of content (scheduling, push/pull, delivery targets, update mechanism). ICE also communicates metadata relevant to syndication or relevant to the distribution of content. And ICE automates operational issues involved in syndication as well.

The ICE Specification is over 3 years old. Since its start, Web infrastructure standards have matured and new Web standards have emerged. ICE implementers have learned lessons as well. The ICE Authoring Group is now in the process of drafting the next major version of ICE. Learn more about the new version of ICE and how will enable syndication as a Web Service.
