General Session: Postal Automation: Initiatives, Transitions & Best Practices–Part I
Automation is moving at a quickening pace within the US Postal Service. The US Postal Service is laying the groundwork to automate the mailing supply chain in ways that will impact everyone in the mailing industry. There is a virtual alphabet soup of initiatives -- and most with acronyms -- APPS, DPS, FAST, FSS, DPV, and END. And let's throw in the mix new or evolving programs for the Intelligent Mail Barcode, Seamless Acceptance, and PostalOne!. The blocks are being laid but fundamental questions remain:
- How are the pieces fitting together across the US Postal Service silos?
- What are missing elements to create a successful integrated approach?
- What are industry best practices that can be applied to enhance success?
In this session, we address what are the building blocks to successful automation and assess where we are today.

Concurrent Session: An Aggressive Approach to Address Quality–Part I
The US Postal Service continues to take an aggressive approach to reducing undeliverable-as-addressed (UAA) mail. Their goal is to reduce UAA by 50% by 2010 and with it, reduce the nearly $2 billion spent forwarding, returning, and disposing of nearly 10 billion pieces of mail. CASS cycle L, which goes into effect August 1, 2007, is merely the first in a series of steps mailers take to vanquish UAA. In this session, we will explore the next CASS cycle and the challenges it brings. We'll also discuss key areas mailers need to be concerned about related to this next aggressive approach to address quality including:
- Performance–How can you mitigate the performance impact?
- Implementation–What steps do you need to take now to smoothly transition to this next CASS cycle?
- Policy–What are the challenges as a result of using DPV and LACSLink Products as a part of CASS L?

Concurrent Roundtables with Working Lunch ? Grab Your Lunch with Sessions will start at 12:30pm
How can the industry work theory into practice? Concepts into reality? Here's your opportunity to push the envelope on topics of interest to your business tomorrow.
#1 What Happens to Postal Rates with FSS? Palm Room
Moderator: Val Scansaroli, Hearst Magazines
Flat Sequencing System (FSS) will automate mail and is reported to potentially save significant in office carrier time. But, some mail (carrier route sorted pieces) will be processed downstream. If you're a mailer who prepares mail efficiently and prepares mostly carrier route sorted mail, will FSS really reduce your postage bill? Will the US Postal Service capture all of the projected efficiencies? Can they monitor the behavior of over 250,000 carriers, out on the street?
#2 What's a New Model for Newsstand Supply Chain to Gain Efficiencies & Profitability? Island 2
Co-Moderators:
- Richard Lawton, Senior Vice President, COMAG Marketing Group
- David Steinhardt, President & CEO, IDEAlliance
As a result of market and business dynamics led by customers (like Wal-Mart) and supply chain partners (like Prologix), the Newsstand Supply Chain is changing. Across the Supply Chain, the partners are seeking ways to improve efficiencies and profitability. So what's the new model? Attend the roundtable discussion to better understand the trends and possibilities.
#3 What's the Crystal Ball for Cycle N? Bay Room
Moderator: Chris Lien, Director of Commercial Mail Market, Business Objects
#4 What are the Alternatives to New Standard Flat Rates? Sanddollar (8th Floor)
Moderator: Peter J. Morre, President, Peter J. moore & associates/LLC
In light of the impending massive increase to Standard Flat Rates, mailers are casting about for alternatives.
Can I convert my flats to a letter? Are digest-sized or tabbed slim-jims a practical alternative? What are the real pospects for relief
from the PRC? This roundtable will provide an open forum for discussing these and related issues. |
