Abstract:

Many a consultant embarking on development of a new DTD will ask themselves the question "is this the last DTD I'm every going to develop; will it be Schemas from here on in?"

This presentation will suggest how to develop a DTD with this suspicion in mind: a DTD which will proudly embody the wisdom of its DTD forbears while also being able to co-exist happily alongside its future Schema brethren.

Based on hard-won experience developing DTDs for many of the world's best known publishers, this presentation will draw on real-world case studies to present suggestions for best practice in DTD design, confess horrible mistakes, and suggest techniques for negotiating those awkward moments when principles and reality diverge.
