E-Initiatives - E-Business, Digital File Exchange,
E-Commerce...

Co-Moderated By:

Bill Davison
President
Point Balance Inc.

Linda Burman
President/CEO
L.A. Burman Associates

Alan Darling, COO of Quality house of graphics illustrated how the various E-initiatives will work by following the life of a photograph through print production and looking at where it "picked up XML tags or "metadata" and what each XML pickup provided:

  1. At the photographer, PRISM tagging is used to add the name of the copyright owner, the date, and licensing information.
  2. At the agency, SPACE/XML is used for ad placement, frequency, and mechanical specifications.
  3. The agency prepress will use JDF for ad position, production information, and things like screen angles.
  4. The magazine ad production area will then use PRISM again to mark the placement of an ad in the magazine.
  5. In magazine production, JDF is used for assembly with editiorial content.
  6. The magazine's web production area may use PRISM to control web layout and content usage or syndication.
  7. The magazine may then transmit the whole layout and instructions for the magazine's production to the printer with PROSE XML.
