The
Digital Photography Dilemma
Moderator: Kin Wah Lam, Time Inc.
Panelists: Dennis Dunbar, APA [
- 29kb]; Michael Grecco, Ed Photographer;
Nadar Anvari, Eastman Kodak; Michael Brandson,
PEOPLE [
- 53kb]
Now that "match-art" is no longer a meaningful instruction,
how do you determine the photographer's intent? Do you
know where we are in the development of a standard methodology
to convey this intent? In this session, you will learn
how others have coped with this new challenge, and whether
you are ready to integrate this into your business. Are
we setting ourselves up for another digital nightmare,
or are we on target for an electronic delight? |

Electronic
Soup to Nuts-Digital A to Z
Moderator: Dianne Kennedy, IDEAlliance
Panelists: Nan Gelhard, Summit Racing; Craig
Shrader, SPACE XML; David Motheral, Motheral
Printing
Now that we've solved digital advertising and computer-to-plate
the next frontier in the graphic arts is a seamless electronic
workflow, specifically as it pertains to the exchange
of business information. If you can withdraw cash from
an ATM globally why can't you send electronic insertion
orders, or electronic manufacturing instructions? There
is no question that our industry is behind the times,
archaic and simply immobile. Learn how to exploit supply
chain automation tools as JDF, Space XML, PROSE, Ad-ID
and more. Skip this session if faster, better, cheaper
is of no interest to you! |

Separating Fact from Fiction
Moderator: Elizabeth Wimmer, CMP Media
Panelists: Martin Bailey, Global Graphics [
- 649kb]; Joe Duncan, Leo Burnett [
- 127kb]; Kin Wah Lam, Time, Inc.
PDF/X . . . . does one size fit all? Hear war stories
from the trenches both good and bad. Even though it is
a pervasive file format the technol-ogy continues to evolve.
For example, there has been a proliferation of new trapping
tools, preflight options and applications designed for
con-tent creators. Walk away with a deeper understanding
of the current toolsets and what the pros and cons are
for each of them. Learn what tips and tricks does our
panel of experts have for making your life easier. |

Technology as it pertains to Agencies & Publishing Technology
Update: Is the future here?
Moderator: Mark Geeves, Best Color
Panelists: Marshall Perkins, Print Network;
Lacey Tuttle, PotteryBarn; Warren Thompson, Time
Inc.; Scott Repa, Brown Printing
What's going on in the pressroom that everyone in
the supply chain needs to know? We're here to tell you.
The latest innovations in pressroom automation and color
controls are improving the impact of color reproduction
as a communication medium. Production data is now being
made available upstream to the publisher and cataloger
with huge benefit. The expert panel will relate from different
perspectives-publisher, cataloger, printer and trade shop-to
the ROI of new technology, the changing realities in the
authority in the work flow. The panel will share prognostications
about where the pressroom needs to go, and their pressroom
wish list. |

Workflow/Process
Automation
Moderator: Eve Asbury, Saatchi & Saatchi
Panelists: Deborah Hutchinson, AGFA; Gary
Dulgins, Dalim; Dan Evergard, CREO
Today's global business environment demands a more
collaborative, agile production process. Just speaking
SWOP is not enough to navigate the interna-tional terrain,
you've got to be familiar with the local standards and
customs. This is one subject you don't want to learn on
the job. Come to this session to see how others have achieved
a flexible international workflow. Learn from their experiences
and mishaps. |

State-of-the-Art
Production Systems: Assembling All the Digital Pieces
Moderator: Linda Manes Goodwin, Manes Goodwin Associates
Panelists: Johnny Sutton, Quebecor World; Eric
Wood, Brown Printing; Gary Lundberg, Quad Graphics
Digital Photography, Metadata, File Formats, Digital
Ads, Virtual Proofing are only pieces of a totally integrated
digital process that have the poten-tial to remove the
walls that separate us. The goal in developing one seamless
workflow where automation and communication flow effort-lessly
between distinct participants in the production chain
is slowly becoming a reality. Although no system can yet
claim to deliver a total solution., there are impressive
implementations pushing the boundaries. Come learn about
the new technologies uniting this industry as a seam-less
process and gain a glimpse of the future. |

Alternative
Screening Technologies
Moderator: Ken Petersen, PPC
Panelists: Gordon Pritchard, Creo; Steve Musselman,
Agfa [
- 1.2mb]; Linda Enright, Vision Graphics
The traditional halftone process employed in printing
dates back to the 1881 when Frederick Ives patented the
half tone screen. Surely there's a better way? CTP has
enabled the second coming of stochastic, and now there
are newer interesting alternatives that show great promise.
Are there any drawbacks to these processes that can produce
a near perfect printed piece? Why isn't everyone doing
it? Decide if it will work in your business today, or
are you right to wait prudently before rushing into this
dramatic change. In this session you will hear about several
alternative screening tech-nologies including hybrid screening
(not merely stochastic, not just conventional). First
there was AM, then there was FM and now there is XM! These
screening technologies purport to not only eliminate moiré
but also enhance the printed product in several ways.
What are these benefits? How are they achieved? What are
the drawbacks? A hard look at what experience is telling
us about the next generation of printing methodologies.
