International
Paper Roll and Package Label Specifications
GCA Standard 132-1997
The
first international industry standard
for uniform labels on web paper in printing
and publishing. The paper, printing,
and publishing industries have their
first international standard for paper
roll labels, giving uniform guidelines
for the design and location of human
readable and bar coded information.
The new standard label applies to rolls
of paper shipped from paper mills to
printers and newspapers in North America
and Europe. Before the standard, paper
mills printed human readable and bar
coded information anywhere on the labels
used for web paper. The International
Paper Roll and Package Label Specifications
offer a uniform design for printing
the logo, roll identifier bar codes,
critical roll description information,
and optional data needed by individual
customers or mills. It specifies roll
identifier bar codes-either the North
American Roll Identifier or European
bar code standards-large enough for
distance reading, to speed up unloading
in warehouses. The standard, developed
by the Joint Roll Identification and
Label Committee, represented six leading
paper, publishing, and printing organizations
in North America. Staff from counterpart
groups in Europe have also approved
the standard. The document, available
from GCA, includes samples of labels
printed by impact and laser printers.
